Cadette GS & Parents,
After much conversation and feedback, the Cadette troop will stick with meeting once a month on Sunday evening from 5-7:30 pm. Right now, we are looking at the 1st Sunday or 2nd Sunday of each month (depending if there is a holiday conflict) We are checking out some potential meeting locations. Additionally, our girls will help with the Daisy, Brownies and Juniors that are still meeting at Kanapaha Middle School during their meetings. This will allow the girls to accumulate any volunteer hours needed (see below regarding CAST).
Communication
We will be setting up a new troop email address. From this point forward, the troop will be 1085. No more changing numbers.gstroop1085@__________.___ (coming soon) {Now gstroop1085@gmail.com} We will be looking at a way to communicate with the girls weekly (via vodcast, newsletter, WordPress, Tumblr or BlogSpot). If anyone has an expertise in either of these formats, please let us know! {http://gstroop1085.blogspot.com/}
Camping - Every quarter we will plan a camping trip.
• Mar, Apr or May – Florida Caverns, OLeno, Kateri, North Fork or Seminole Springs (Or our SU Camp Out** April 5-7, 2013)
• Jun, Jul or Aug - this trip/camping experience will more than likely take the place of our end of the year trip to a theme park as the girls have expressed an interest in exploring other parts of the state and SE United States. (They have already done research on places like Key West, Georgia, Alabama and so on.)
• Sept, Oct or Nov – Florida Caverns, OLeno, Kateri, North Fork or Seminole Springs
• Dec, Jan or Feb – Florida Caverns, OLeno, Kateri, North Fork or Seminole Springs
Troop needs
Because our Cadettes want to do a lot of travel and high adventure activities, we will need to participate in both Nut/Candy and Cookie sales. And perhaps one or two additional fundraisers throughout the year. This can be a yard sale or anything else you can think of. We are open for ideas from you and the girls! We are switching our dues from bi-weekly troop dues to quarterly dues of $25. This is a slight change of the average of $90 a year they are paying now in dues. Wendy will get Canoe training. Kiah will take Archery training and will update her First Aid/CPR certification in October. We are also looking for a troop treasurer!!
CAST
The Lake Kanapaha SU has a committee of girls (Cadettes and older) who plan all of the large events like the SU Camp Out, Thinking Day, etc. We would like to see all of our girls participate in CAST for at least one of the events the SU plans. These opportunities will allow the girls to start accumulating volunteer hours. We know that students at HBMS that are invited to join the National Junior Society are required to volunteer. We can imagine that the Builders Club at KMS has the same standards, and so on with Lincoln. This is the perfect opportunity! I’m attaching a flyer with the details.
I ask that each girl commit to at least 2 CAST Meetings and help with the SU Camp Out. Even if you cannot commit to regular troop meetings, being a part of CAST will still be a great way to be involved!
Long Term Plan
The ultimate goal is for the Cadette girls to earn their Silver Award. In order to do this, we will need to complete two Cadette Journeys and all of the requirements for the Silver Award. We have exactly 2 years to accomplish this as a troop. Because the Silver Award guidelines have changed over the past 5 years, the girls and leaders will be signed up for one of the “All that Glitters” workshop in the fall to learn more. The second goal is to visit New York/Boston/Philadelphia at the end of the next 2 years. We have already researched trips via EF Tours and Smithsonian tours and they offer many tours for Girl Scouts.
Long, Long Term Plan (4 years +)
In discussing the future, many of the girls wanted to travel abroad! We have looked at trips going to many parts of Europe, including London & Pax Lodge (a GS center), Paris, and the Chalet (in Switzerland which is also a Girl Scout center). But we will not be able to do this without prep and hard work going forward from both the girls and support from parents. Ultimately, we appreciate each of you and your daughters’ commitment to Girl Scouting. We know that the older these young ladies get, the more they are involved with other things. The balance between school work, church, dance, sports and family is even harder to juggle. But we want to make things as easy as possible for the girls to stay involved while not giving up on their other passions. Last but not least, congratulations to Taylor, Sierra, Faye and Jordan for completing the 5th grade. We are so proud of all of you. All That Glitters^ Learn the ins and outs of earning the Bronze, Silver or Gold Award and get excited about taking action in your community.
Jump Into Journeys* Jumpstart your Girl Scout year and set off on the right foot using the It’s Your Planet–Love It! Journey series. As we kick-off your troop’s Journey, girls will embark on their first session while adults begin to map out their troop’s path.
She’s a Scientist+ This four-session series will introduce you to amazing local women who solve problems, explore ideas, improve people’s lives, and break stereotypes. Come to the Cade Museum and see how cool a career in science can be. Girls will need to attend at least 2 of these workshops.
